Some pain after root canal

by 81artmonk, May 12, 2008 11:59AM
I've had a root canal and the pain from that procedure has subsided. However, since the surgery
I have had pain in my lower jaw, when I swallow, and it is painfull to open my mouth while attempting
to eat. This pain hasn't gotten better or worse. It is subdued with a steady dose of Advil every 8 hours
I have been to the doctors, and precribed anitbiotics, and after 3 days nothing seems to be working.
Not even a slight improvment in my pain. Should I be concerned.
My dentist told me that my tooth was cracked and wasn't sure how far or how bad. He stated that
if it was cracked too far, that my root canal would not work and the tooth would have to be pulled
if that were the case. Now, my tooth itself doesn't hurt. I've used my tooth brush to bite down slightly
and I feel no pain at all on or around the area. So I am wondering if this pain I am feeling is in
anyway, associated with this crack or pain my dentist told me about??  Or if it is something
entirely different.

After many days of not much eating, my mouth is starting to come around. It is slowly
getting better. I think what has happened, was when the dentist did the root canal. My mouth
was pried open to it's fullest extent, in order to work on the furthest back tooth, for almost an hour
or more, and my muscles and everything associated with my jaw, got stretched out. my estimation
kinda like pulling a muscle while working out, and it's taking a very long time for everything to stop
hurting and get back to normal.
I can now open my mouth and chew without it hurting. Of course this is just my own opinion, and I
may be wrong, but this is just what I think is going on since it is slowly getting better and today was
the first day I didn't have any lingering ongoing pain when opening my mouth or chewing.
