Sore On Gums

Hi, I don't know if this is a common thing or not, but I have a sore on my inner upper gums. I've had this happen before on both the left and right side of my inner upper gums, right near my teeth. Usually, it begins with the "skin" of my gums starting to feel kind of rough and then after a bit it starts to get loose and it falls off, and I am left with a sore in my mouth. About a year and a half ago I asked my dentist what it was and he laughed and said it looked "like an old pizza burn". I told him that it had been there for a while and it comes and goes. He gave me a referral for a biopsy, but my appointment for that was cancelled and I felt quite foolish trying to reschedule for a biopsy on what the dentist thought was a burn, so I just let it go. But now, I have one so painful that I cannot eat on that side of my mouth. I do not think that it is a canker sore, because everything I have read says that canker sores are white with a red border and the sore on my gums is completely red. Also, I have not seen any mention of canker sores being on the gums. Has this ever happened to anybody else, and should I even be concerned about it?

Call your dentist now so he can see it while it's inflamed. Maybe he could do a brush biopsy in office. If not, don't be shy about getting things biopsied. At least you'd know for sure.
