Still feeling Pain after tooth extraction

by rckndy, Jan 15, 2009 03:52PM
A week ago I was having terrible a terrible toothache on the right side of my face. To the point where I was getting headaches on that side and it was hard to open my mouth. My face was also swollen. The dentist gave me pain medicine which help. He also gave me antibiotics. I took those for two days and then he extracted the tooth today. The pain is gone, no more toothaches. But my jaw still feels a bit tight. Not as tight as before, but I feel a bit soreness when I go to chew my food. Is this something I should be worried about, or will it clear up as I finish my antibiotics?

It sounds like you had some trismus and possibility some cellulitis.  I am guessing that there was an infection that was pretty hard and swollen and it may be pinching/pressing on your muscles that open your jaw and its making it harder to open.  As the infection resolves from your own immune system and antibiotics, your swelling will go down and it should be easier to open your jaw.  If it doesn't improve in about 3-4 days after starting antibiotics, I would contact your dentist to see if there may something else such as a muscle strain/pull.
