Stitches creating sores after wisdom tooth extraction

by person8, Aug 11, 2009 12:25PM
About 4 days ago I removed my right third molar. The extraction went very well with little or no pain, and afterwards there was no noticeable swelling. Unfortunately the stitching proved to be an entirely different matter. I had three stitches, two directly above the area they extracted the molar from (the hole) and one on the outer side of my second molar, almost perfectly in the middle running top to bottom, roughly parallel to my jawbone. About five hours (bleeding had stopped for several hours) after the extraction the first of the three stitches fell out (I was messing with it with my tongue..my fault). Then, a couple days after the second stitch closing the hole also fell out (I wasn't messing with it this time...the hole had healed completely). The problem stitch was the third which appeared to be creating a sore (canker..cold..not sure which).

The skin around the stitch is noticeably redder, slightly painful and the gum which appeared to have healed over the lateral cut on the second molar has split again. The stitching also appears to be digging a rather unpleasant looking hole in my cheek where it meets my jaw. Is this normal? Should I just wait it out for the 4 days until I see my dentist or can I cut it out? (it seems to be doing more harm than good)

I would leave the stitch alone to prevent the area from opening up more.  If it bothers you, I would try to rinse the area gently to keep it clean and go back to your dentist sooner to have the stitch removed.
