Swelling bumps on back of tongue

by Martired, Nov 18, 2005 12:00AM
Episodically I go through periods of weeks to months where I will have spontaneous bumps swell up on the back of my tongue.  They are not painful nor do they itch, but they are disconcerting as I fear they'll block my airway.  The swelling lasts only a matter of hours and resolves as quickly as it appeared.  I've been seen by an MD, but get no clear answers other than that they don't appear to be too concerned.  I was given an Epipen by one because of my fear of the throat blocking, but that expired a couple of years ago and I don't know if I need to go back and get another or if I need a more thorough diagnostic eval.

It might be that the taste buds that are located on the back of your tongue get inflamed for some reason. I would suggest that when it occurs again that you make an emergency visit to an oral surgeon.
