Temporary Crown Fell Off/Painful Gums

I had a root canal done a little over a week ago for a sharp pain I felt every time I would chew on that tooth. The dentist installed a temporary crown until the permanent one was finished. A few hours ago my temporary crown fell off, and the appointment to get the permanent one put on isn't for another 2 weeks, so I'm going to call the dentist tomorrow to see what he suggests. Anyway, there is no pain in the tooth anymore, but the gum in front of this tooth and behind the other one is sensitive and painful. It was like that before the root canal was done, and I thought the procedure would fix the gum pain too. I asked the dentist about it and he said that it would probably stop when the procedure was complete too. Well, it's been over a week, and the gum is still hurting. It's not constant, it's only when contact is made with it, which is what it was like with my tooth too. It's annoying and it is still making it difficult to chew on that side. Is this another problem unrelated to the one in my tooth? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :)

go back and have a new temporary crown put on. root canals have nothing to do with relieving gum pain. are the gums swollen or irritated? if not the tooth might be fractured under the gum line which is usually not repairable.
