Terrible pain and sensitivity to hot/cold after a dental filling

I went to the dentist last Monday for molar filling. The doctor took an xray before drilling the tooth. She gave me a full syringe of anesthetic and the whole left side of the mouth felt very numb. After the treatment, I saw a bruise in the outer left side of my lip. Later that evening when the numbness started to pass, I had severe pain and sensitivity in the tooth that she worked and the tooth behind it. I went back to her and she readjusted the height of the filling. This reduced the sensitivity of the problem tooth and now when I bite, it doesnt feel sensitive at that tooth. But everytime I eat anything hot or cold the pain is excrutiating in the 2 teeth and it hurts till the ear. This pain doesnt go away for a long time until I take a motrin. What is causing this problem. Did the dentist hit a nerve or she did something wrong? I didn't have any problems before the treatment.
Please advice

it sounds like trauma to the nerve. sometimes large fillings get close to the nerve. it might calm down on its own but the sensitivity to heat might mean there is an infection. if it doesnt get better on its own you will probably need a root canal. this is not your dentists fault its just something that can happen with large fillings.
