Titanium Implants VS All Ceramic

I am 23 yrs old and I have to have my four front teeth removed and implants placed in. I have seen so many dentist who only tell me that what they have is the best. I am very young to have these implants so I want what will be the most durable and aesthetically pleasing. I hear the titanium can reveal the metal post if my gums recede. My gums have receded from braces on my bottom front so my gums are not free of this. Anyone know which is better, titanium or ceramic?

The so called "tried and true titanium" implants have been shown over the years to cause problems with many people. YES titanium is a great metal but there are lots of people reacting adversely to it.

Take my wife for instance, a perfectly health young woman until she got the  titanium post surgically put in just  5 days ago, a day after she got a massive headache with pressure so bad that she can't walk and cried involuntarily since.

We were at the ER today for 6 hours and everything including a spinal tap was done. She also has a fever (102). All tests, spinal tap (to rule out meningitis), facial cat scan, tons of blood work came up mostly negative. The WBC was a bit elevated but nothing else. A call to her oral surgeon from the ER Doc (we are in the military) yielded that it may be the post is possibly sitting on a nerve causing the massive frontal lobe pain.

Here is what we have decided, to have the implant removed - and look at alternatives (Zirconia maybe or a bridge). I can't and will not see my wife like this and she can't bear it anyway. She said think of the most pain you have ever felt in your life and it's 10x worse. She said it's worse that when she had our baby - nuff said it's coming out. Ascetics, meh we will get around it somehow WITHOUT this thing.

You sound like me.  I had to have my top front four teeth removed and implants placed.

That was over two years ago.  I got titanium implants and couldn't be more pleased.  That said, it is true that if your gum recedes the implant post can show.  I don't have a "gummy smile" and even though this did happen with mine, you can't see a thing unless I pull my upper lip over my head!  LOL   No one sees anything except my beautiful crowns even when I smile broadly.

If I had had a gummy smile I may have been tempted to get the zirconium implant rod but my oral surgeon advised the tried and true titanium because they have extra strength.  That's needed so that you can bite into a sandwich and be able to pull back with them.  Although zirconium is really good, I elected to go for the extra strength you get from the titanium cause I really only wanted to do this once and the thought of having a crown break and taking the post with it was motivation enough to go with my OS's recommendation and get the titanium.  I also got porcelain fused to metal crowns.  Again, for the added strength it provides.

I'm so very happy with my implants and crowns!  After being scared to death to have this dental work done at all, I found it not nearly as bad as I had imagined.

Just remember, when you do get the implants there are some things you can do to help heal them along and make the immediate surgical discomfort a lot less.

Good luck!!  Let us know how you do and if you have any questions I may be able to answer, let me know.

My very best to you,
Gellia

Hello Gellia, It is now 2021 and I am having to research this subject. I hope you will not mind if I ask a question or 2 of you. I wondered what your age was when your implant was put in? Are you still pleased with  it and has it caused you any health problems at all i.e. anything new that developed that you did not have before? Do you have any precautions to recommend? did you have an allergy test done before you decided to get the titanium implant?  What did you do to help heal you along and  were you able to finally discontinue have to do those extras to stay healed?

I was concerned if you developed any new conditions i.e. tumors or anything? I hope not but anything foreign in the body is a worry. Also, was your implant on the top or bottom jaw? front or back? how is your root canal/crown holding up? tia

I notice your post is dated 2007 and you probably have had the implants for several years now.  Did you go with titanium or ceramic?  What were the effects, if any?  The problem with titanium is that it is a metal and constantly releases ions, and they often add nickel to it to make it stronger.  The immune system will attack anything it perceives as foreign and toxic sometimes locally, sometimes systemically only, and sometimes both.  My life has never been the same and I suffered with flu symptoms for years and fevers from a dishonest dentist substituting nickel/aluminum/beryllium crowns for the noble metal she promised.  If you can avoid metal, do it.  Why take the chance? I need either a bridge or implant, and would never consider titanium, because even if there were no reaction to the implant, the abutment added later and the tooth can contain nickel.

Thinking about Titanium dental inplants? Don't believe the dentists. They all lie. Don't do it. Don't do it or you will regret for life. Titanium is a toxic material which should not be used for anything in your body, period.
Metal free zirconia implants may be a better choice. I've had titanium dental implants and I'm suffering. because of the horrible side effects. Within  a couple of weeks I'm going to have my implants removed. However, the damage to my health is already done.Don't do it..

titanium allergies are very rare. it is much stronger than other implant materials. yes the main issue is if your gums recede it wont be pretty. the front teeth do not need to withstand as much pressure as molars so you might not need the most durable restoration. discuss the various options with your dentist.

Make sure you are not allergic and do not react to titanium before you have any procredure done.  There are a few of us out there, that are going through horrible inflammation in the joints throughout the entire body.  We are miserable.  It appears that the common thread we all have is that we have dental implants made of titanium.
Please have your blood checked by Melissa in Canada.  They are the only ones that can truely test for a metal allergy.  You do not want to go through time, money, mental anguish but most of all the pain of a metal reaction.
Some people say it cannot happen, but we are living proof that it can and does happen to people who react to titanium.
Stay in touch if you need more information.

Thank you! So then titanium is the best bet since it has been around longer? I guess I'm nervous to spend so much money and then have to do it all over again. I figured, since I can only find one dentist that does ceramic in the Detroit area. Thank you again.
