Tongue coating and different sensations on tongue

by destini26, Oct 08, 2008 03:12PM
I have had a white tongue coating for months it seems as though everything i eat stains my tongue, been to PCP and ENT, had allergy test, brush biopsy, given antibotics, and tongue meds to no avail, i have had various sensations over the past 6 months with my tongue, nausea, dry mouth at times, nasty taste in mouth, tingling on tip of tongue, burning sensation, also irrirated more by certain toothpaste, mouthwash, and spicy foods.  Going to see dentist next week, hoping there is some relief.  An insight from expert point of view.

I would have imagined that it may be geographic tongue but it probably would show up on a brush biopsy?  Have you had a topical steroid prescribed to see if that'll make the white coating go away?  If that's already been attempted, you may want to see if its a possibility of a side effect from medications that you may be taking.  Another possibility may be an allergic reaction to something new that you may have been using such as mouth wash, toothpaste, makeup, etc.

What is the possibility of this being due to some kind of sexually transmitted infections via oral sex?  Had a HIV test in August negative. I have read so much on the internet don't know what to think or suspect.  I have no other symptoms aside from this orally going on.

Well, the only medication that has a side effect that may be causing your white tongue is the Rhinocort.  It says that is has a rare side effect of oral candidiasis (thrush).  It may be whats causing your tongue to be white and irritable.  If its a white, wipe-able plaque on your tongue, a course of anti-fungals may work.  If it isn't wipe-able, I would still stick with geographic tongue and try a course of steroids.  Hope that helps.

Its probably not an STD.  At first description, it sounds more like the above.
