Tooth Extraction Still in Pain

Tooth Extraction Still in Pain

I had an upper tooth pulled several weeks ago (#13).  It was a root canal that was infected.  There was a large abcess (abscess) found behind the tooth.  A few days after it was extracted I had more pain- phantom tooth pain, a burning sensation, stabbing sensation.  I am still having pain from the extraction site several weeks later.  I did check with the oral surgeon and he said it was not dry socket.  My question is- is the neuralgia, and if it is, is there a chance that it will heal on its own or is it most always permanent.  I also feel like my cheek is a little swollen above the extraction site still.  I wonder if there could still be an infection there (although nothing is visable).

What did the surgeon say?  Are you on any pain medications?

It may have been a difficult extraction and may require some time to fully heal although usually #13 isn't too tough a tooth to remove.  It could be neuralgia but you should discuss that with your oral surgeon.
