Tooth pain after crown prepping

Tooth pain after crown prepping

I had an old amalgam filling replaced on a molar (tooth #30) in January.  The tooth had a few cracks in it at the time and my dentist thought that replacing the filling might help prevent a crown for a while.  I had no pain/sensitivity prior to the filling replacement.  After replacement the tooth was cold sensitive, intermittantly heat sensitive and mildly painful if I chewed on something hard.  I finally went in for a recheck last week and had the tooth radiographed.  My dentist said all looked fine with the radiograph but she could see the crack on the lingual surface of the molar and would be best to do a crown though she did not feel I needed a root canal.  I went in for the crown prep yesterday.  The tooth was mildy sensitive during drilling/filing.  Once the nerve block wore off the tooth is mild/moderatley sensitive when chewing on anything and mildly achy even when not chewing.  The gum is very sensitive (which makes sense).  Not really sensitive to cold/heat but if I press on the temporay crown with my finger I can elicit mild pain on the buccal side of the top of the tooth but not the linqual side.  Is it normal for there to be pain on chewing even softer foods right after a crown prep?  If so how long should this take to go away?  Thanks.

Going back to your dentist to have more occlusion adjustment of temporay crown is advised.
