Toothache after metal filling

I got two molars on the right side of my mouth (top and bottom, both the second ones from the back) filled last Wednesday. It is almost a week later and I am MISERABLE. After the procedure several canker sores developed around the area where I got my novocaine injections and a HUGE one also appeared on the inside of my cheek on the side that I got the fillings on. My dentist told me that some sensitivity was normal and that neither of the fillings was very deep so there should be virtually no pain anyway. Well, I'm having a great deal of pain and I'm not sure if it's being caused by my teeth or the canker sores or possibly both! I've had a root canal before and this pain is nowhere near the pain I experienced then, it's a dull sort of throbbing pain that isn't worsened by pressure on the tooth but it does get worse when I eat cold foods or lightly tap the molars together. My bottom molar also get shooting pains when I brush. I'm thinking I might need a root canal on one if not both of the molars, but I would rather not have to do that, so are there any other possibilities of what the pain might be?

Going back to your dentist to have occlusal adjustment is advised.
