Unexplained Pain in Dental Crown

Hello everyone,

I'm new, and hoping someone has some idea of an answer. My story begins about 3 months ago. I had a very large cavity (about 60% of the tooth) on number #19 - a bottom right molar - that required a white filling. I had no pain before the work. After the filling, though, I began to have a seriously sharp pain to biting. No pain to hot and normal pain to cold, nothing new there.

I went through two bite adjustments, but nothing made it better, and my dentist concluded that there was probably a crack we couldn't see. She decided the best thing to do would be to crown the tooth.

I received a temporary crown about 3 or so days ago, made to last for about a year (due to some other mouth issues I have this was necessary so as to delay further work). She told me to test it out. Still no sensitivity to hot, normal to cold. Still a sharp bite pain.

I went back the day after and she adjusted the bite. She then advised me to let it rest for a couple of days. I did so, then tried with a soft piece of chicken. Still the same sharp bite pain. I mentioned this to her today, to which she replied she had no idea as to why this is happening, but would prefer not to root canal the tooth, as it, and I quote "doesn't seem like that kind of pain, as it is not sensitive to anything other than bite."

She is sending me to a specialist, but that appointment is awhile off. Does anyone have any idea as to what this could be?

Cheers!

Becca

Your dentist probably wants to confirm if there's a need for a root canal or not.  When she puts cold on your tooth, do you feel anything at all?
