What type of problem is this pain?

My lower left gums near my left molar seem to be hurting a lot. The pain is almost non-existant at times but at other times even with local anethesia it hurst a lot.  I went to the dentist who said I was suffering from gum disease and gave me anti-biotics to help with the pain. This helped according to him when I went to a check-up a week later and it did reduce the pain in my mouth but that area still hurts. What I want to know is if this problem sounds like a wisdom tooth, a cavity in my molar, or gum disease?

You can always seek a second opinion on the matter.

If it is gum disease, a proper cleaning should do the trick.  The antibiotics help with any abscess or infection in the short term but a cleaning is necessary for long term care.
