When antibiotics dont seem to work?

I got the diagnosis periapical absess this Wednesday, 8th July. I went to the dentist after a sleepless night in pain and with a slightly swollen lower part of my left cheek. The strange thing is that this happened just a week after visiting another dentist and going through a regular check that was finished with the conclusion that everything was ok, and that I could probably just get renewed some old fillings that I had from 9th grade at school *I am 28 now*. One of them was actually a huge one, or rather 2 small ones melted into one covering the tooth affected by the abcess now.  I wonder how the dentist could not discover the abscess earlier, bearing in mind that she worked on the same tooth and took x-ray pictures just a week ago? Can an abscess be activated by a dentists intervention somehow? I had never experienced any pain before, I always do my medical checks and things are taken care of timely, or at least I  have tried to do my part to achieve this. I mean I have never suspected an infection.
Anyway, my main problem is that I am on antibiotics now, but the swollen part does not subside.  I have been told to take medicines in a week and contact an endologist afterwards. But should I wait, now I am feeling a slight pain around the tooth near the swollen cheek area, before that I had no pain, just the excessive size of my cheek puzzled me and after the sleepless night, I seem to feel pain in the evening and during nightime, it is a mystery to me, during the day I am ok. What is the proper course of action in my case, seems to me that I have been a victim of insufficient attention and wrong treatment.
I am really confused, and pain makes this exposition a little bit chaotic, but hope someone will get through the complicated syntax, ignore all possible grammar mistakes and give me an answer that will relieve me from the pain and will help me get through this ordeal with a smile!

If antibiotics does not work in 3 days, it's probably bacause the bacteria are resistent to antibiotics. You may need to swithch to another antibiotics. However, elimination of the source of infection is essential, which consists of endodontic treament or surgical procedure.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right. I am getting endodontic treatment now, I mean I just got intracanal  CaOH2 and a temporary filling and before that I got an incision of the abscess, which was quite painful because the anaesthetic did not seem to work...But the good thing is that my cheek is not that swollen now, people can recognize me, which is comforting. But I still have a long path to go until full recovery. I am still using the same type of antibiotics> Dalacin and Flagyl, probably they work but kind of slowly because the infection is severe, I do not know. The problem is that I am allergic to penicilin and some other antibiotics like amopen and eritrocin and this narrows the scope of possible alternatives.
Thank you once again and enjoy the summer!
