White Area on Back of Tongue

by ConcernedInTX, Dec 28, 2005 12:00AM
About 5 or 6 months ago i developed a white discolortion on the back of my tognue after a cold....at least that is when I noticed it sticking out my tongue to look at my throat.  It seems to almost completely go away when I brush but there is always a little coloring there.  It is not painful and you can only see it when I stick out my tongue all the way.

I asked my allergist about this last time I visited and he said that it was normal and just to brush it.  I also asked my dentist about this and she did not seem concerned at all.

Is there cause for concern.  It tends to be whiter in the eveneing and sometimes I can scrap some of it away but looks like food build up although it is white.  Sometimes it almost completely goes away.  Again I can only see this when I stick out my tongue all the way.  It is also only present there and no where else on my tongue.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me that it is nothing to worry about. If you are still concerned then get a consultation with an oral surgeon for a definitive diagnosis.
