Worried about swollen cheek/medication

I recently visited a dentist about some horrible tooth pain.  Turns out, it was a tooth that had already had a root canal a few years ago that had gotten infected.  The dentist did a partial root canal, and left the tooth open to drain.  Well, my question is, I really didn't have any swelling in my cheek/jaw before the procedure, and now it's terribly swollen, down below my jaw.  He gave me Clindamycin to take.  Is that the proper antibiotic?  Will the infection spread?  The pus doesn't seem to be draining like he said it would.  I'm very worried about the spread to the brain and such.  Should I go back in asap?  Thank you so much!!

Hi,
You have to give the antibiotic a chance to work.  Swelling is normal with an infection and has a tendency to seek the lowest spot which is the lowest point in lower jaw.  It always makes a person look a bit like a chipmunk!

Clindamycin is a very powerful antibiotic.  It can kill healthy bacteria along with the bad.  Eat some yogurt with live acidophiles in it to help keep your tummy settled and promote the good bacteria.  If you don't like yogurt get the acidophiles capsules, but do take something like that.

If you've been on the antibiotic for three or four days already and you haven't experienced any relief in pain, give your dentist a call.

Hope this helps.
My best to you,
Gellia
