Titanium allergy would be exceedingly rare. All joint replacements are made from titanium material. If you test positive for allergy, these would also no longer be an option for you. Joint replacement with titanium has not been reported as an allergenic.
I wouldn't let a general dentist do an implant...only an oral surgeon...
I reread your note...you said your aunt had horrendous problems.
What type of problems did she have? Where they implant placement problems, infections, etc. or did her body react to the implant...if so, what were the symptoms?
Appreciate your imput.

Do NOT go to a dental school for your implant. You want to go to a dentist that has had a lot of experience with doing it correctly. I have heard many horror stories from people with the problems they are having with implants.
I have one and it was put in beautifully. And it was a difficult insertion with very little room to work with. Next to front tooth. I had special x rays taken before and the dentist made sure that there was enough space, bone, distance from sinuses, etc. before he considered me for an implant. Again it was a success.....
BUT after it was put in I am having severe joint pain, ringing in ears and have found that I could be allergic to the titanium that is in the implant. Now after many doctors and surgeons and dentists and the metal test in Canada Melissa metal testing....I am still trying to find the correct thing to do...remove or keep?!?!?
Many doctors say this cannot be....but nothing is 100% and some doctors are saying take it out.
My advice. Do not rush into it. Do your homework and ask a ton of questions.
Also do not try to get away without an experienced dentist. In the end....you may get what you paid for.....
Hope this helps you avoid any problems down the road.
implants are the closest restoration to a natural tooth. the procedure cost more than most others which is why many insurance plans dont cover it. they want you to go with a cheaper option. i would not get an implant from a dental school. since this procedure is more difficult than a simple filling and such i would want to go to a dentist that has lots of previous experience. this would decrease the risk of something going wrong.
