any risk of infection if i have a cigarette?

any risk of infection if i have a cigarette?

I went to my dentist today and had the rt. side of my mouth deep cleaned, (deep scaling and root planing) this was more preventative, i had no pockets deeper than a 5 in my four molars. anyhow, my hygienist mentioned to not drink from a straw the rest of the day, and careful eating as to not bite my lip off.....haha, can i have a cigarette, or is there high risk for infection below my Newly cleaned gumline??

There probably won't be a big problem with it but I wouldn't recommend it anyways.  Make sure you maintain your hygiene and brush/floss properly to keep your gums healthy.  Smoking does contribute to gum disease as well as a host of other diseases throughout.  Obviously I'd recommend you quit.

With smoking the way inflammation manifest is totally different....the vessels due to contineous exposure to smoke and other chemicals tend to shrink and get thicker and thicker therefore tissues don't respond the way they normally do...you will have more of the inflammation but less of the signs and symptoms like minimal or no bleeding. Its the same reason smokers tend to get more of the dry sockets after extractions. With smoking everybody talks about lungs cancer but mouth is equally prone to get it. It is higly advisable to get a thorough oral cancer screening after age 50 and onwards. Hope it helps!!
