bumbs, growths on gums

I have bumbs or growths on the lower inner part of my bottom gums between my teeth and my tongue and also one large protrusion on my bottom gum on the cheek side. My dentist called it tarus (sp??) and said it was genetic but nothing to worry about unless I ever needed dentures. Can you tell me more about this? Is there anything I can do to stop these growths from getting bigger or spreading? Thank you.

These areas if I am correct are called tori(that is plural for torus). These can occur both on the upper or lower jaws. On the upper it is usually on the palate and is called a torus palatinus. On the lower they usually occur on the inside of the lower jaw and is called torus mandibularis. These are normal out growths of the bone. There is no treatment necessary for them.
