canker or cold sore

About two weeks ago I had a little sore on my hard palate with a little swelling.  I also had a canker sore on my lip from when I bit it.  I saw my dentist about the swelling on my palate.  He did a percussion test on my tooth and there was some sensitivity.  My x-ray did not show an absess (abscess) either.  The provider cleaned the tooth that the swelling was underneath and opened up the swollen area in case of pus.  Well after that I developed a very painful wound where the swollen gum tissue was.  I was given kenalog to help it to heal and I had a hard time finding relief to eat and talk.  The area began to look like a huge canker sore.  White center red on the outside.  I was told you could not develop canker sores on your hard palate.  So then they assumed it was herpes 1 but they all agreed that it didn't look like a typical herpes lesion.  I'm kinda shocked to hear this.  I've never had a fever blister or a cold sore.  I do develop canker sores very easily.   SO WHAT COULD IT BE?

Hard palate is not a prevalent site for canker sore (aphthous ulcer) or cold sore(herpes infection).Based on the information provided, it appears that the swelling is associated with a tooth. The working diagnosis is periodontitis. Seeing an oral pathologist is advised.
