chemical burn on tongue

A couple  of months ago, I accidently left some teeth whitening chemical (the kind you get from the dentist which is used in the trays for teeth whitening).  It caused a big red patch on the top of my tongue.  While the redness has reduced a bit, it is still there.  It looks as though the top layer of my tongue where the chemical was taken off.
Will that top layer ever come back?  If so, how long will take?

Thanks for any response.
