concern about after effect of periodontal surgery

Last week, I had periodontal surgery on my right bottom quardirant.  The packaging came 48 afterwards.  The stitching came out 4 days after the surgery.  My concern is that it is very painful on the right side and more scary is that my gums is receding exposing the gap and tooth.   I called the dentist and was told to come in Monday after the weekend in which all this occurred.  I went in for the visit today.  The Periodontist basic said what I had informed him over the weekend on the phone.  That the packing came out and that that part of the stitching came out.  He said it was a little red and inflamed.  Other than that, it looked normal.  He asked if I wanted packing over it again. I said yes because although I eat on the left side, the food circulate over to the right side and settle into the exposed gap between the teeth.  He did not offer to numb my gums.  He just said it's going to hurt when he apply the packing the exposed teeth where the surgery took place.  He then ask if I wanted a pill for the pain.  My roommate thought this was first unprofessional not to numb the affected area before applying pressure.  He also indicated that since this is a new periodontist in the office, that I should seek a second opinion regarding the receding gum line and exposed gap where the periodontist did not offer to re-stitch the affected area.  I had the same thing done on my right side this same time last year at the same office.  I had no pain like I am experiencing now.  The guy the periodontist that own the practice and did the first procedure retired.  This new guy is nothing like the previous professional.  Please help and advice about getting a second opinion.
