crown lengthening vs extraction

by kikiann512, Apr 02, 2009 02:38PM
I had a crown placed on a tooth a while back and it kept falling off. Now I'm being told I need crown lengthening. I went to 2 dentists who told me to have the tooth extracted. One dentist told me that there was some decay and that the tooth would need to be pulled one day anyway. He also told me that the area was too small to put an implant in. I don't like the idea of pulling the tooth and leaving a gap. What should I do? Please help.

If you want to try to save the tooth, you can try to save it with a crown lengthening but you need to understand that it has a poor prognosis (future outcome) and that it may need to be pulled anyways even with the crown lengthening.  You can look into doing orthodontics (braces) to move your teeth to create space for an implant or find a dentist/oral surgeon who feels that a mini-implant can be placed for cosmetic purposes without too much function on it.
