crowns

I have seen a lot of post on this forum that complain about pain after having a crown put on or having pain under the crown after having them awhile.  Some even think that they may have abscesses growing in the roots/canals of the crowned tooth.  I thought that the whole point of a crown was to protect damaged teeth especially from bacteria that will lead to abscesses.  Others say that their crown does not fit right.  Has anyone had a real great experience with their crown?  How long are crowns suppose to last.

I am a  bit frustrated.  I had a crown done on a back lower molar several months ago.  It was a deep cavity.  Pins were put in to help strengthen the tooth and then it was reconstructed and the crown was put on.  The bite was off and I was hitting it hard and causing pain.  My bite was adjusted but now I have a throbbing sensation.  The crown doesn't feel like there is a proper seal around it and when I floss, it gets caught in the back of it.  Now there is an odor and I feel there is an infection.  I went back to my dentist who is referring me to an endontist.  I am wondering if there isn't a good seal around the tooth can it allow for bacteria to enter and cause more damage?  And can the nerve be damaged from the constant hitting of it when it was so high?  I am frustrated because this all adds up to alot of misery and money.  Please let me know your thoughts.

i have one crown for a few months that has a sharp edge and since the tooth is badly cracked underneath it cant be removed so i hope they can file it to remove the ledge that sticks out over the back of the tooth. i have had another crown for 30 years without a single problem. just because a tooth has a crown things can still happen like root fractures but without a crown chances of loosing a cracked/root canaled tooth dramatically increases. if you crown a molar get gold. its much stronger and has less impact on surrounding teeth and gums. it will also last much longer. remember most people post here because they have a problem the majority of people dont have problems and therefore have no reason to post on a dental forum.
