deep filling question

deep filling question

I have had fillings, crowns and 2 root canals.  I generally have issues with getting the bite right.  On a couple of occasions I thought for sure a RC would be needed but after getting the bite right I was OK...it took weeks.  Mt family thinks my dentist is crown happy since I have had so many.  He seem enthusiastic about his work, attended the Las Vegas institue and even makes his own crowns.  He is also expensive.  He's a bit fanatical and even replaced two older crowns at no charge because he thought the did not wear correctly.

I have been thinking about changing to my wife's dentist because of cost and the constant need for these crowns.

My last visit they found decay under a back tooth (upper) that had not shown signs of decay 6 months earlier.  He said it was deep filling that needed to be redone.  I sort of freaked thinking I'd need a root canal and crown but he thought that might not be necesary.  I had the filling done, white filling.  The nurse noted it was deep but he left saying I he thought he 'saved me from another crown' but to exect sensitivity for a couple of days and after that I might need the bite adjusted---I have never had a crown or filling that I did not need the bite adjusted at least twice.

I took tylenol the first day and did not chew on that side.  It was senisitive to cold and air if I sucked it in...which I found myself do to see if it affected the tooth. The next day no Tylenol but still did not chew on that side...wanted to give the tooth a rest.  On days 3 - 4  I slowly started chewing on the side. It seamed to be less sensitive.  I think it was day 6 that I stared chewing on that side with little sensitivty.  Day 7 I was eating normally and at lunch said 'I think the filling worked'.  I never should have said that because at dinner it became very sensitive to my cold drink and chewing and started to throb.  I tood some Allieve and finsihed dinner.  It was about the same the next day...I took one Allieve at 8am.  It wa ssensitive t lunch and again at dinner it flared up throbbing.

Exactly a week later, I went back and he adjusted the bite.  It is still sensitive to cold and sucking in air.  At times if I moved my tongue over it is sensistive.  Now and then it throbs if exersiing or at dinner. I have been taking the Allieve, once in the morning and not chewing on that side.  Its been 3 days since the bite adjustment. I think it might be a little better though still sensitive and I am not chewing on tha side figuring I'd give the tooth a break for a few more days.

If the sensitivity etc goes comlpletely away in another day or so but returns when I start chewing on that side, do you think its just the bite?  It weird how I had the 2 day strech where it was fine a week ago.  I must also add I have allergies to the extreme of needing shots and my sinus's are somewhat messed up thru all this.

I have no idea if I'm talking myself into a root canal, if I should switch dentists etc etc.  I know this dentist never physically hurt me but that is no reason to stay I guess...no dentists should hurt you...but I did have a bad experience elsewhere before him and expensive or not, doing unnecesary work or not I am comfortable with his work...I know that sound crazy but I am the type who gets petrified before every visit.

What do you think...I am confused and getting depressed....
