dental sensitivity after crown

Several years ago I had a molar prepared for a crown (actually a bridge). Though I was given a local anesthetic, as soon as the dentist started preparing the tooth, I had tremendous pain. He had to finish the procedure and had to give several more injections to no avail. The tooth, every time he worked on a particular section of it, was completely painful. There was no relief with the local. (This never happened in any other dental procedure I ever had.) He said I probably had an anomolous nerve. Anyway, he put on the temporary but I had pain when biting down even though the fit of the crown was fine. He used some medication but it didn't help. There had never been any trouble with this tooth -- it was a healthy tooth and was only prepared because I needed it as part of a bridge. Now I have the permanent and I still have the pain with biting. It's not severe but it's annoying. Why did this happen and what can be done, aside from a root canal which I do not want?

I think you need RCT on that tooth.I do not think there is anything else    in particular that will alleviate the discomfort. Why it happened would be pure conjecture on my part.

I agree with the last posting.  sometimes a prep can damage the nerve on the tooth and you need to take it out...hence a root canal.  im not sure why you wouldn't want this as it has a crown on it anyhow.
