dry socket, painful tongue

dry socket, painful tongue

Hello - I hope this isn't a redundant question -
A week from last Thursday (today is Saturday), I had my four impacted wisdom teeth removed. I followed the post-care instructions but I would up with two dry sockets anyway. The Sunday after my surgery I had to get a dressing placed, and since then I have had dressings replaced every two days or so. The Thursday after my surgery my tongue began to hurt - the tip and the sides felt like they had been burned, or were being burned perpetually. My taste buds are swollen, and it looks quite unnatural and really kind of ugly. I asked my surgeon what this could be, and he said that possibly my tongue was sensitive to the medicine in the dressings or to the prescribed ibuprofin i had been taking (600mg/6hrs). I don't know if this is right, he didn't seem to be sure and/or concerned about it. I'm scared, typically, like a paranoid person, that I'm going to have my tongue cut off and that my dry socket will never feel better (it still hurts quite like it did when it first developed.) Also- ! - I have TMJ. I can't open my mouth very far.
Is this all normal? What is all of this????
I'm 19 years old, 10 days away from being 20 - does that make a difference?
Thank you!

Sorry that you're in discomfort.

The dry socket may take a week or longer to heal up.  It seems that the area is healing more slowly than usual and it'll just take some time.

As for the odd sensations on your tongue, it could be a reaction to the medication that is placed in the socket.

Do you normally have a TMJ problem?  If not, it could be just the trauma from the surgery that has made the muscles sore and it may take a little while for the jaw to be able to open up fully again.

You may want to post this question in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to see what the oral surgeon says and get his feedback as well.  He probably does more wisdom teeth than I.
