dry socket pain

first, thank you for your previous response. my husband picked up oil of cloves and some qauze squares. a friend told him to soak the gauze in the oil and then put it in the socket to help with the pain. will this work or will it affect the healing process?

Although not ideal, it may help a little and should not affect the healing process too much.

Please tell me what causes a dry socket? I need a "residual root" extaction and don't want to get one! Thanks

If I am correct then dry socket is when you have a tooth pulled you get a blood clot in that hole. If you drink through a straw,smoke, that kind of thing you can dislodge the blood clot and it (this is where I get a little unsure) irritates the top layer of bone. It causes pain that knocks your socks off...lol. But can usually be stopped by going back to your dentist and they will pack it with gauze and (I think)oil of clove. This numbs it and helps it heal and then you want to kiss that dentist...lol. Anyway, I know its some sort of irritation or infection of some kind and I am pretty positive it is the top of the bone but could be wrong on that. Good Luck!!!

I just had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted.  Tomorrow will have been 2 weeks.  I got a dry socket on both of my bottom holes.  The right hole was packed for three days and I haven't had a problem with it since except for the usual aching that will go away once it has filled in.  The bottom hole on the left is very deep (28 years old and that tooth wasn't even through the skin yet) that I got a dry socket in on the third day.  I had gauze that tasted like turpentine put in and changed everyday for 4 days, then out for 3 then in for 1 and a half days.  I am dying here!  My oral surgeon says I have got to go without my gauze because it prolongs the healing process.  My teeth ache on that side on top and bottom and I feel like my head is throbbing all the way up to my temple.  I am taking darvicets (because I get sick on percocets) but I feel as if I am not taking anything for the pain.  Does anyone know how long this should last?  I have read from 1 to 2 months of persistent pain but please tell me this is not true!  Any suggestions on what I should do?  Help!!!!!

I had all 4 wisdoms out on friday. i found out yesterday that i have dry socket.i was told that i should feel better today... YEAH RIGHT! i feel worse today then yesterday! i was told that i should feel better by Thursday... i sure hope so. right now i do not beleive anything anyone says. i feel this will last forever right now. i am so swollen that i have a hard time swallowing! i can not sleep at all. if this pain lasts for 1 to 2 months... i will go postal. PLEASE SAY THAT IS NOT TRUE!! I CAN NOT LIVE THIS WAY FOREVER!!!

I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled 8 days ago and I develop dry socket in both my bottom teeth. They were impacted and I've been in tremendous pain. I have a feeling this isn't going away anytime soon either...Does anyone know how long this can go on because I'll go crazy knowing I can't chew the food I like (I'd kill to eat some wings and pizza) for a month....Ohhhh, the humanity....I've been goin the past three days for "packing" treatment but now I keep reading that this actually prolongs the healing process? Is this true? How does dry socket improve if blood doesn't clot in the hole? Could this be permanent? And should it affect the sensitivity of my other teeth because I can't drink anything cold...this sucks. I hate life.

I had dry Socket when I got my Wisdom Teeth out in 1996. I used clove oil to help with the pain. It did great for the pain. I had actually seen it done in a movie where this gal was so poor she simpy put a clove in the area. I don't recommend that but the clove oil used carefully has been great and does NOT hinder the healing process. Of course everybody is different.
My Ortho surgeon also suggested the following that can be found in any pharmacy over the counter. Red Cross Toothache Medicine. I have never used it but it might work for you.
I just recently had my tooth with an amalgam filling removed and have gotten a bad case of Dry Socket. I am reverting back to my clove oil. According to my surgeon, he suggests getting an eye dropper and putting a tiny tiny amount of oil directly into the socket. For me, He said to do it every two hours until the pain subsides all together. It worked last time! I would recommend it highly!!
