Hi, I had a bottom wisdom tooth out 10 days ago, after 3 days started to get throbbing pains so returned to the hospital where they cleaned out the socket and packed it with dissolving dressing, the socket is healing but seems a small hole is taking its time to close up, 3 days after the packing iam getting occasional pain,on a scale of 5 (1-10). What i dont understand is how dentists are treating patients in  N. America with dressings that need to be removed?? I last had a molar removed at the dental hospital (Birmingham. England) in 94, it wouldnt clot, kept bleeding so they packed it out with dissolving dressing and stitched it - which worked. This time its abit different and its a hassle as who'd have thought a poxy little tooth could cause so much agro. Still, iam to be grateful that iam not suffering as much as others posting/have posted on here. I feel there should be more research into dry socket, it may not be life threatening but it is depressing and debilitating.

I am SO relieved I found this forum. It's been 16 days and no one at my office can believe I'm still walking around with the pain and swelling and even bleeding. When I first had this done I thought well this was easy, no pain, no swelling and the bam! On the 4th day after the extraction I thought I ws going to die and I swelled up just like a chipmunk. I've been back to the dr almost very day since to get the socket repacked but am trying my second round of going with it unpacked right now. Within an hour of them unpacking it, it swelled right back up again and is painful. I'm trying a liquid diet now since food kept getting stuck in the hold despite using the syringe. I'm also using a hot pack I put in the microwave to alleviate the swelling in my cheek -in addition to all the usual drugs.

I'm not sure how long it will take to heal. I had a dry socket once and it healed pretty fast. They are so painful! If I were you, I would call him today and ask if you can come in to have him repack if before the weekend or prescribe a pain med in case it flares up over the weekend when you unpack it.

Your dentist probably will pack it again and check for infection. If you have been this long with out smoking, don't start again. Get some nicotine patches because they do help with the cravings.
