excessive tongue biting?

When I looked in the mirror this morning I saw large sores on both sides of my tongue. Their posistion and surface shapes suggest that they were caused by top and bottom jaws repeatedly coming together with the tongue stuck in the middle. If that is the case, what would cause a person to do that, and is their anything I can do to help them heal? I'm a 21-year-old male, had several cavities when I was a child, with a pretty good dental history since then, although [looks right, looks left] (whispers) to be honest, I don't brush as often as I should, though I am trying to get back in the proper habit :|.

You could be having seizures in your sleep. Every time I have a seizure I bite my tongue, and I didn't start having seizures until I was in my early 30s. When I have seizures in my sleep, sometimes the only clue is the bite injuries to my tongue. It's worth asking your doctor.
