finished antibiotics for abcess(abscess).. still swollen & painful.. what next?

by catmf, Oct 03, 2009 06:53AM
a week ago i lost a filling in a back molar.. my gum & cheek quickly became very swollen and painful, i went to an emergency dentist who took an x-ray, drained the abcess (abscess) & gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics (penicillin v)
i have now finished the course of antibiotics but there is still some pain and swelling in the tooth & cheek... it regularly drains pus & blood.. the tooth also still has a gaping hole. will the antibiotics stay in my system & continue to take down the swelling? what should be my next action??
- i have only just moved here & am not registered with a dentist so am feeling at a bit of a loss as to where else to go

Elimination of the source of infection is essential. Antibiotics alone may not completely eliminate the infection.Seeing a dentist is advised.
