gum grafting pain after surgery

hello, I had a gum graft done 5 days ago. they took skin from the roof of my mouth and stitched it to the gums where I am missing the tooth. (tooth #12) I am eventually getting a dental implant done, but I needed a gum graft done and then once it heals a bone graft done then finally the implant. my question is..... I have heard of some ppl feeling a lot better within days.. I have more pain now then I did the first cpl days? is this normal. I have had to take my prescription for Tylenol #3 every 4 hrs as it was prescribed and also ive been taking motrin in between the pain pills. the pain goes from my pallete where was cut to he insision site where the stitches are. Does anyone know if this is normal?? The pain seems to be even in my top jaw bone today to my ear today. just a sore dull feeling. I cant wait to feel normal again or at least not in as much pain :( My dr seems to think this is normal & Says that everyone heals differently? any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I related to your situation.  I required a few skin grafts and connective tissue grafts by my periodontist after a hole in my gum was discovered.

The idea was to close the hole and 8 months later, I'm still getting procedures done to close the gap between an implant and my gum.

This last procedure was the worst as far as healing.  I had a lot of swelling in the area and a week later, I still have a hard area in my cheek that I don't know what it is.  He thinks it's probably a blood clot and it will take time to dissolve.  I'm not sure what it is.  It doesn't feel normal.  This has been a nightmare for me of procedures and healing, and the problem has not yet been resolved.

I don't mean to scare you; I can just relate to what you're feeling.  If in 2 weeks this hard area in my cheek doesn't go away I'm going to see an oral surgeon to see what it is.  Good luck.

Take your medications as you have been instructed and directed to.

Do salt water mouth washes.

There is not much more than you can do unfortunately.

I still feel it would be a good idea to have a chat with the dentist, he may see you before Monday.

Best wishes.

they are supp to dissolve on their own, but if they are not all dissolved. I have an apt on mon am to get them removed and to get looked at to see if the graft took or not? praying it does. if not I honestly don't know if I would go thru all this pain again for another graft? its bad.

Glad to know that you are on amoxicillin.  This will get rid of and prevent any bacterial infections.

You did say that you have some stitches.  I did find that when the flesh is healing and the stitches are tight that can cause pain.  Have you been told when to go back to get the stitches removed?

I forgot to mention I am on amoxicillin 500 mg every 6hrs also. so I wouldn't think there would be infection? I asked dr if I could get a dry socket with this surgery, he said no? just not sure if its healing or why its more sore...it comes and goes also...sometimes its very strong for awhile and sometimes its not quite as strong :( and its just the left side of my cheek which is where my gums were operated on? aghh its just so painful. inormally have a high pain tolerance too...except for now.

Motrin is another name for Ibuprofen which is an anti inflammatory drug.  Make sure you take this as prescribed with or after eating food as it can cause problems with your stomach.

As regard the pains that you are experiencing, I would have thought that the pain should lessen as each day goes by and not get worse.
If there is no improvement over the day or so or it does get worse make an appointment to see a different doctor to check your ears and throat to ensure that you do not have an infection that you may now need an antibiotic.  It may be that you have a sinus issue.

If you feel that you have got blocked sinuses, do steam inhalations to clear the tubes.

You could also ring up the Dentist to check your mouth to ensure there is no infection.

Doing mouth washes with salty water will aid healing.

Hope you start to feel better soon.
