implants vs. Dentures etc.

implants vs. Dentures etc.

Doctor: I am a 48 year old male, healthy except for my mouth. I am on several meds that cause my saliva level to low, hence the rapid decay.  I just had my four front bottom teeth extracted, bone beneath is solid and healthy. I still have time to decide what I want to replace them with. Dentures, implants, bridge I think or is it a partial. Do you have any input or professional preference as to what might be the best choice?
Thank you very much, Chris W.

It would depend on how severe is your saliva flow.  It becomes very difficult to have any long lasting results with any treatment because the low flow of saliva makes food stick to everything and can cause cavities and gum disease.  You may want to discuss with your MD and dentist about the medications and see if there may be alternative meds that can be used to help with the saliva problem.  Even with a denture, it may be uncomfortable as food can get stuck underneath and won't wash out as easily.  It is very important to address the dry mouth with home care, different types of toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.  Be sure to try to chew more sugar free gum, carry a bottle of water, etc to keep the mouth moist.

About dry mouth, which I also have related to blood pressure and antidepressant meds, antihistamines, inhalers.
My hygienist recommended Biotene products and a disciplined protocol: I brush twice daily with Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth, rinse with undiluted Oasis or Biotene mouthwash for dry mouth for one full minute, use Oasis spray when notice mouth is dry, and at bedtime apply Biotene gel liberally with your finger to entire mouth and gums.  It's okay to swallow the gel and spray.
And, of course, it goes without saying, FLOSS. She recommended 'gentle care' unwaxed floss, not tape. Biotene also makes a gum that really works.
The products are tasteless, contain nothing harsh.
Following this routine has my dry mouth syndrome completely in check.
