infection and tooth fragments

So 3 weeks ago I had my lower right 1st molar removed.  It was a very difficult procedure and required the bottom of my mouth being cut open.  Surgeon seemed very compitent came with good recommendations.  I am a diabetic and asked if I needed antibiotics he stated no. The very next day I developed a high fever and ended up in the ER where they started me on 2000mg of keflex.  I felt better over the next few days, but still very swollen.  Went to a follow up and a different dentist stated I still had an infection not dry socket, and was concerned about my swelling.  She attempted to contact the surgeon who did not call back.  She sent me home and stated i should be fine.  A week later, I ended up in the hospital with IV antibiotics and still no word from the surgeon.  This is now week 3, I still have intermittent facial swelling, a huge non healing hole in my mouth and a bony structure next to my ectraction site.  Saw a new dentist and he states I still have infection and he needs to re-open and then suture the site shut and he has to remove the bony structure and close around the exposed bones??  Is any of this normal? The new dentist called the surgeon who flew off the handle and demanded I come to see him only.  Not sure that I should he seems very arrogant and unwilling to help me in my delemas. What should I do

Its pretty tough.  I would go back to the surgeon and have him check it out.  Legally I think (not 100% sure, not a lawyer) he's liable for the extractions and I'm sure he wants to resolve any problems you have.  If there is an infection, they should probably place you on antibiotics and they may want to remove any infected tissue and bone that may be in the socket.  I would bring up your concerns and whats happened to the surgeon so he can take care of you.  If you aren't comfortable seeing him, you may go back to the dentist but I would suggest you go to the surgeon first to at least hear him out.
