is it a dental or medical necessity

my son has a cross/under bite and currently has an orthodontic appliance to correct this.  my question is what kind of medical issues or problems could come from this, and whether or not it should be covered medically or dentally.

Unfortunately, it could be either.  Insurance coverage is rather tricky at times but I would say that dental insurance is much more likely to cover the cross/under bite than medical although sometimes your particular policy may cover it.

What kind of problems could come from the orthodontic appliance or leaving the underbite alone?  I don't generally do orthodontics so I can't really answer that.
