my mouth is really dry

by briant401, Jun 04, 2009 08:22PM
i ate pineapple about a week ago and i think the citrus acid burned my tongue, i got bumps on the tip of my tongue my mouth was really dry and my tongue was painful.  I went to the dentiste yesterday and he examined my mouth and tongue and couldnt find anything out of the normal and he said that eating foods high in acid will do a number on your tongue but should start to heal in about a week.  My question is my tongue definately feels better, but my mouth is still dry and i have a metallic taste.  Is this a result of burning my taste buds, my mouth isnt as dry as it was a few days ago but its still uncomfortable.  Does using mouth wash make it worse?  any help would be appreciated.

As long as its improving, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Especially if your dentist says there isn't anything, I would continue to monitor the symptoms.  I would recommend not using any mouthwash with alcohol in it right now only cause the alcohol would dry your mouth.  Try using just warm salt water for a week and then back to the mouth wash as soon as your dry mouth is gone.

thank you for responding i appreciate it.  Do you know how long it should take for this to heal? is almost 2 weeks a long time?  My tongue def feels better and my mouth is not as dry but still i can tell, unless its because i keep thinking about it.  I did switch to non alcohol mouthwash yesterday and have been drinking a lot of water to see if that helps.

I would imagine that two weeks should take care of the issue.  Have you had any other changes in the last two weeks, perhaps change in toothpaste, mouthwash, medication, etc.  Sometimes side effects from certain chemicals or medications can cause weird tastes and dry mouth.

There is no more pain on my tongue, but still dry.  Can it be from using Peroxyil mouthwash.  I didnt realize when i bought it that it has peroxide in it, can this be casuing the dryness.

Its possible.  Try discontinuing it and see if that improves the dryness.
