never flossed till now

I just started fossing for the first time in my life because the gums were really red and inflammed so the dentist said i had to start now.  Since I started flossing it is hurting my gums when i try to eat now. I get a sharp pain every time i chew. Is this because i have some sort of Gum Diease or something along those lines?

It sounds like you have gingivitis and possibly periodontitis.  Initially with flossing and improved oral hygiene, you will notice some bleeding and discomfort.  But as the plaque and tartar (calculus) is removed from your teeth, your gums will heal and will feel better.  It is because you have that stuff that its causing your gums to be sensitive.  Also, after your dentist does the cleaning, you may have similar symptoms for about a week.  I would ask your dentist but over the counter pain medication should be sufficient. Depending on your medical health, some over the counter pain medications may not be appropriate.  Consult with your dentist.
