one more question for scott

hi scott
i called my dentist today and he claims he cured the resin filling including the sealant and the only option is to use the same exact material again..nothing else..today im still suffering with alot of sour taste coming from the filling..i know this because i put my tongue on it and its sour!  im wondering if it will eventually leach out completely or if this is a forever problem.  also what other bonding agents are there? i read there are tons of different ones..why would a dentist just have one?  im getting to the point where i will want to extract this back tooth..i already spent 2000.00 on the crown and 1200.00 on the root canal. i really can't see buying another crown and the tooth isn't in the best shape..please let me know what you think. im really getting depressed over this..its affecting my life. thanks elle

Dear Valerie,I am having the same nightmare with my molars that you had, the difference is I had it because of an endodontic procedure, can you please be so kind to tell me how you solve the problem?

If the offending tooth is third molar (wisdom tooth), I generally do'nt rescue the tooth, unless the tooth functions like 2nd molar. The base of tongue hitting  the tooth indicates that the required tongue space is occupied by lingual surface of the restored tooth, reduction of lingual surface of restored tooth is the method to relieve your tongue problem. I believe you may also feel awkward whilst swallowing. With regard the issue of sour taste, trial and error of different filling material would find out which material would be compatible with your body. Your problem is straight forward, easy to solve. There is no need to worry. Best wishes to you.

i cannot sleep..up all night with this sour taste draining down my throat..the day i left his office two weeks ago the taste was intense..i was hoping it would eventually go away..felt ill tonight from it..i have a very stubborn doctor that will not see me for something like this.. i don't understand how there could be any cavity there after a thorough root canal..its the last molar on the right. im going to make an appointment with another dentist and hopefully he or she will remove this horrible filling asap. i cannot believe how you can suffer from just one filling.  do you think its the sealant? do you need a sealant after the tooth has been bonded with the resin filling..what material is the best?  my tongue is hitting the top of the filling all the time and its sour 24/7 and getting worse instead of better..affecting my life and not sleeping and a dentist that doesn't want to see me ..thats how he is..he feels no one is allergic to the stuff he uses and he knows he cured it..he also knows im hypersensitive..  any other suggestions..i would love to hear back..thanks ellen

Assuming the tooth is lower second or third molar, there is metal crown restoration, root canal was perfomed after crown delivery. The existing condition is there is an occlusal cavity .The problem comes from the filling material which provokes unpleasant taste upon contact of tongue,i.e, if there is no contact between tongue and filling material, unpleasant taste is not present. If above description is not correct , you need to correct me.Firstly, you can ask your dentist to remove the existing filling material and find out if the sour taste is present or not.If the sour taste is still present after removal of filling material, the sour taste probably comes from something else.If the sour tase does'nt exist after removal of filling material,it 's almost sure that the sour taste does come from the filling material. Now , the dentist can try avariety of filling material which is compatible with your taste perception.
There are many brands of filling material, a dentist tends to use the one he /she feels comfortaqble. I do'nt think a dentist would stoch a lot of different brands of filling material. I use only two brands of filling material in my practice for more than 10 years.
