pain 4 days after crown

pain 4 days after crown

I had a crown put on a cracked tooth (upper right side molar) four days ago and am in serious pain.  Unfortunately my dr. called yesterday to check on me and I missed the call.  I called today and the office is closed till Monday!  Should I be worried?  Is this normal?  It hurts all the way to my ear and my ear feels plugged.  I am taking ibuprophen and an occasional Norco to help at night, but I am worried because I am also breast feeding my 5 month old son.  Any advice would be appreciated.

if there were no symptoms of pulpal origin before crown delivery, the possible cause of pain is occlusal interference of new restoration. Going back to your dentist to have occlusal adjustment is advised.

When a crown is placed, they most always do root canal therapy.  sometimes the root is really deep and can get very close to one of several jaw nerves.  this may be causing your continued discomfort.  It will eventually go away after the swelling subsides.  You may have to increase the amount of norco you take through the weekend.  It won't hurt your baby it will just make him/her a bit more tired than usual.  If you are still in pain on monday, give them a call.....they may want to see you.

I had a crown put on #18 molar on June 30th, it has been irritating me ever since
I thought I was allergic to the chemicals he used for something but scottma stated that is highly unlikely, which he is correct.  I think it is like he stated occlusional.

I had it adjusted july 17, october 28, and Nov 4, it still feels like a glob in my mouth, but december 6th I was eating a piece of bread and the crown fell further down into my gums or something. I felt pain drastically, and then it subsided to just soreness. It still is not right, Dec 11th it moved further down into my gums. Every time I eat, it seems like it gets pushed further down into my gums.  December 12 it still seems to be moving and seemed like it was moving left to right all the time.  Last night, if felt like it moved further down into my gums again, this morning my gums are still sore, but the pain has subsided.

Scottma stated when the crown comes back from the lab they seem to  always need some type of an adjusment.  My crown is oversided for my mouth, but since it fell deeper into the gums it seems like it is adjusting to my mouth better.   It was definitely too high.  The dentist told me it was because I was grinding my teeth! LOL

I didn't have a root canal on this one though.   You are lucky you have a dentist that calls you back, mine wants to even charge me for adjusting my crown he put on when I go into have it adjusted.

Let us know what happens with your crown, I'm curious.

sorry the crown that is irritating me is 19 not 18.   18 is the gold one.  I get so confused with this teeth number system.

Well, I ended up with a root canal 7 days later!  Not fun.  The pain was so bad the first day I took my c-section drugs and tried to sleep it off.  Very miserable. I also ended up going back two days later to have it filed down again.  At this point I am frustrated and a little worried.  He says it should get better now, but now it is so sensitive I cannot chew on that side.  It is even uncomfortable to brush my teeth!  I will give it the two weeks he said it may take, then I am going to get a second opinion...

How is your crown.  That is ridiculous to pay to have it adjusted!

i went back the 16th of Dec.  He took an x - ray and I told him I hope I'm not being charged for this, he stated no I would not be.

He stated that there is nothing wrong with my cap that it is normal for it to move.  (I don't believe that but.......) ok he's the dentist what ever he states. He can tell me anything and he thinks I'll believe it.  So he didn't adjust it at all.  I told him about it falling further down into my gums on the 6th and the 11th of December.  He stated he doesn't think it actually went deeper into the gums, states it is the same as it was when he put it on the first time.  LOL   I know what I feel and I know when I ate that piece of bread it was pushed further down into my gums.

At first I thought I might be allergic to the materials the cap was made from because it was irritating my gums and his receptionist stated should could not provide me that info due to hipaa and that the lab would not talk to me at all for what ever reason.

I told her I didn't need to talk to the lab I need to know what materials are in the crown that was made for me that I might be allergic to something.

Anyway, I explained to him about the Dental Board in my state telling me he is in violation of  code 4715.30 A 7 and he gave me the (work order) lab papers I wanted.  It doesn't have the materials on it but I'm sure the lab will have to provide them if I ask for them. He crossed out his license number on the work order he gave me, but I got it from the dental board site.

so now I am going to see if I can have another dentist look at the crown he put on and see what is wrong with it. trying to find a  prosthodontist like scottma stated. There is still something wrong with this cap and it keeps moving when I eat. I just don't think that is normal.

My bite is off due to this cap also and the dentist states there is nothing wrong with it and it does not need adjusted.  ?

Now that you got a root canal, it might get better.  It may have been the nerve causing alot of the pain maybe, hopefully that is all it is and hopefully your dentist put you cap on right. I think putting the cap on the right way is the main thing and preparing the tooth is really critical.   I don't understand, why some dentist want to put a crown on knowing well enough that the tooth may need a root canal. Then after the crown is on and settling or adjusting, they tell you that you need a root canal.

My didn't start acting up until one month after he put it on and after it was adjusted the first time.

Oh, I brought up to him about charging me again for the adjustment also.  He didn't say one word.  I told him I knew someone who had 6 adjustments and was never charged once.  Then her cap was replaced free of charge. I think someone from this forum told me about her episode regarding her cap.

Next time I am going to read the policy like wannabefree330 stated to me regarding crowns the dentist office do.

I am just so scared to go back to this dentist for anything and he was suppose to have been a great dentist.  Charges for his own mistakes, has a receptionist that lies, I really need to find a great dentist.

good luck  keep us posted.
