painful gums and jaw after crown

I had a broken tooth filled and crowned last week.  It hurt so bad that i was taking 2 vicodins and 4 ibprophen and using  a cold pack just to sleep.  I went back to the dentist, he took an x-ray and said nothing was caught in the crown, and the tooth looked okay.  He said there would be discomfort for about 2 weeks.  Well every night I have to take atleast 4 ibprophen and 1 vicodin to make it through the night.  Today while at work, it started up again.  I'm wondering is something wrong.  I cant chew or nothing on that side. The only relief is if I continue taking a vicodin, 4 ibprophen and a ice pack.  How long will this last?  Should I  get a second opinion?  Im in pain all the time

I would get a second opionion or go see a prosthdontist.  I ended up in serious pain from two crowned teeth, the crowns are ill fitting.  Prosthodontist is the one who found my problem.   In fact If it were not for this site I may have not have ever found the answer to my problem.    Did you have a root canal done?   I ended up with getting two root canals on my crowned teeth and my occlusal adjustments.

I can't say enough to get a second opinion if you dentist won't find out what the problem is as soon as possible.   My dentist kept telling me there was nothing wrong for almost 7 months and now I have a gap between my 19 and 20 teeth.

I am still in pain somewhat but not drastic pain like I was, He did the occlusal and it settled down but then I had to have the root canals done, they would not subside.

My jaw is still feeling weird and so is my chin still, the gap hopefully can be fixed somehow.     Also  You might want to find out where your crown came from or was made as some dentist are getting them made overseas and as you have read the women from Ravenna and one from Hudson had alot of lead in their crowns or bridgework and this caused serious problems.   Get on line and surf, read about it I forget what site it is on, but who is to say where the crowns were made if they don't make them in their own laboratory?      I tried to find out where my crown came from and what materials it was made from and the dentist's office wanted to give me a hard time about it.

After my crowns are off, they are going to a lab to be tested for lead.

Does anything specific cause the pain to start or get worse?  Biting, chewing, hot, cold...or does it seem to be spontaneous?
Discomfort is normal for 1-2 weeks, but not the kind that requires prescription medications.

If the crowned tooth was asymptomatic before crown delivery, the culprit of your pain is strongly associated with crown. Possible causes of  your complaints include, but not limited to, ill fitting margin, residue of cement remained in sulcus, occlusal interference, as well as pulpitis. If your restorative dentist can not solve your problem, seeing another dentist is advised.
