painful sensitivity to cold in old crown next to new one

painful sensitivity to cold in old crown next to new one

I recently got a new crown that is seated right next to an older crown on lower R side of my mouth.  The temporary crown was fine while waiting for the new one to come back from the lab.  The new permanent one was tight when it was put in two weeks ago.  The dentist filed it down a bit but then cemented it telling me it would be better to have it a little snug than to have food stick between it and that the "tight" feeling would go away as I got used to the crown.  He did get floss between the two crowns but with some difficulty.  A couple of days after the new crown was cemented in, I started to feel sensitivity to cold.  I get the painful sensitivity even when drinking cold tap water. It seems to actually be occurring at the base of the old crown in front of (next to) the new one.  I put my fingertip next to the gum to feel if there is a space.  It does feel like there is an indentation on the older crown not the new one.  Can the older crown have possibly been shifted by the new one due to the tightness of the new one?  I hope I am making some sense here.

You are making sense but I don't think the old crown shifted.More likely it is the cement that the crown was cemented with that is causing the temporary sensitivity. If the sensitivity does not diminish in a week or two I would return to the dentist to have it checked out.
