Hi! I had a nonpainful lower first molar extracted today, which had a periapical abcess and the fracture was too deep to be saved with endodontic treatment. I asked the doctor if I should take antibiotics before, she said no. The extraction was 12 hours ago and went well, she told me that the entire infected root has been removed sucesfully, and there is no sign of infection left. She sew the wound and prescribed me antibiotics. I have a strong immune system and usually feel very bad and weak after antibiotics, and seeing that i feel good after the extraction, with no pain at all i kept postponing taking the antibiotics prescribed. 12 hours from the extraction I continue to feel good: no signs of swallowed face, no pain (and i took no pain reliever), a portion of the gum near the wound started to turn white. Am I putting myself at risk? Is it a good idea not to take antibiotics if there are not signs of infection? I lived in 3 different countries which had a different philosophy in regards to antibiotic prescription for dental use: In Netherlands, this was largely avoided, reserved only for patients in certain risk categories (old people, people with heart disease, immunity disorders).
