persistent sensitivity after crown fitting

by arsuen, Apr 04, 2008 12:49AM
Hi,

Thanks in advanced for answering my question.

I had a crown put in this morning because a piece of my tooth broke off a few weeks back.  I have been wearing a temporary crown for the past 3 weeks and avoiding chewing on it.  After the procedure was done, I was told I should be able to eat normally after 1 hour.  Now, after 12 hours, I am still not able to chew on the side that had the new crown because it hurts to chew on (it's sensitive to pressure).   My questions are:

1. Is this normal that there's sensitivity after crown fitting?
2. If so, how many days should I expect before the sensitivity goes away and I can start chewing normally on the affected side?
3. Is there any symptom I should watch out for that might indicate a root canal problem?

Note: When the tooth broke, it's sensitive to chewing pressure but not to temperature.  My dentist shaved off part of the tooth to fit in the crown.  When the dental assist was rinsing my month after taking out the temp crown this morning, she almost killed me with the cold water touching the exposed tooth.  Is that normal?  Or did it mean my nerve was exposed?

Thanks
arsuen

Your problem probably comes from occlusal interference of new restoration. Going back to the dentist and asking for occlusal adjustment is advised.
