post Root Canal infection

Two months ago I had a root canal. The procedure involved drilling thru the gum and into the bone below the tooth and a numbing shot into the bone at that spot. Apparently that spot has got infected. Two courses of antibiotics have not helped. The only thing that helps is a steroid Decadron that will relieve for 4 days and then the gum will re-inflame and tooth will rise and hurt. Endontist says to just wait. Spot on gum where he drilled has still not healed. Any advice, two months seems too long?

i am not a dentist.  However in my case--when a root canal got infected, the endodontist did a combination of the following things:

1. tried different types of antibiotics--the initial gramm positive antibiotic did not help clear the infection.  A more broad spectrum antibiotic covering both positive and negative gramm bacteria did help. I took antibiotics for 12 (not 3, not 7) days.  If an antibiotic does not start helping a little within 48 hours of first dose it might be useful to consider a different type of antibiotic.
2. attempted to *redo* the root canal.

after 'retreatment' of the root canal and the discovery of the correct antibiotic the tooth took about 10 days to lower back completely to its proper level (it rose up before--just like yours).
