post root canal pain

I have had 3 (THREE)root canals done on 2(TWO) adjoining back molars numbers 15 and 14.  When the pain continued on #15 molar the endodontist said I needed a second root canal. That was done 3 weeks ago and I still have pain.  Not intense pain, but mild pain none the less.  The endodontist mentioned that it was possible I might need further surgery or removal of the tooth.  I have had previous root canals done and never ran into this problem.  What is wrong? And what  other surgery can be done besides another root canal?

The surgery they're possibly referring to is called an apicoectomy.   An apicoectomy is done only after a tooth has had at least one root canal procedure and retreatment has not been successful or is not possible.    During this procedure, the end of the root is accessed by going in through the gum and involves removal of the root tip or "apex" of the tooth root which may contain debris or infected tissue.

Sometimes root canals take a few days to a few weeks to settle properly, so maybe you might need to wait a little bit longer and see how it feels.    I had a root canal done on a bottom molar earlier in the year by my regular dentist and something just wasn't right with it, so I am halfway through a second root canal being done by an endodontist and it's been 6 weeks and the tooth only started to really settle down about 10-14 days ago.   My endo wants to wait at least 3 months for it to settle after the first stage of retreatment before he goes ahead and finishes the job.   I've had two other root canals done on different teeth over the years and never had a day's problem with either of them after the treatment.   Unfortunately, some teeth (especially molars in my experience) seem to take time in feeling better after this sort of treatment.

Good luck with it all.   I hope it settles down for you.
