root canal following temporary veneers

Hi,

After my dentist fitted temporary veneers on my two front teeth I experienced alot of sensitivity which radiated down to my bottom teeth. Eventually when the pain got so bad I went back and the dentist had to perform a root canal on one of the front teeth. This was Wednesday and my gum is still very swollen today (Friday). Anyway, what I want to know is whether it is common to get such an infection after temporary veneers are fitted or whether this was due to the dentist doing something wrong. I am very concerned about this because the reason I had the veneers fitted is because he thought he could fix the overlap in my front teeth with bonding but when he did a horrible job on that he switched to the veneer route. Now, Im concerned whether Im going to face further complications where he fits the real veneers if he is not very competent. I wish I could switch dentists but Im stuck with him through a credit agreement.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated as this has caused me alot of anxiety.

If you require a root canal on your front tooth, you may want to consider getting a crown on that tooth instead of a veneer as it provides some more structural support.  You may want to ask your dentist about it.  I wouldn't say that the root canal was caused by dirty instruments.  It maybe due to the preparation work done to reduce the tooth to create space for a veneer which caused some irritation or exposure of the pulp of the tooth, thus requiring a root canal.  Its possible to require a root canal but I wouldn't say its common.

its not common for you to get infected after havin temp.veneers.you probably got infected because his instruments werent properly cleaned,disinfected and sterilised.also having a root canal on your front tooth,you would have to look after it,as the tooth is more prone to cracking and breaking(if you grinde your teeth at night or bite something hard)you can easily crack it because the tooth is now more fragile as there is no nerve,its simply a dead tooth.so be careful not to crack it as you may have it infected and then extracted.
as for the dentist,it sounds like he doesnt know what he is doing.maybe find a way out and see someone who specializes in the field of cosmetic dentistry
