severe pain after dental work

I had two crowns prepped almost 3 weeks ago.  Neither the upper nor the lower jaw ever went completely numb, especially the lower where I never lost sensatiton in my lip or tongue.  I was given multiple injections (at least 8) using at least 6 carpules of anesthetic.  When the anesthetic wore off the pain was horrible in both sites.  It is so bad I am taking 800 mg ibuprophen every 4 hours and it just barely kills some of the pain.  I am taking vicoden at night to sleep otherwise I am up with pain every 3 hours if i just take regular OTC NSAIDS.  I am also taking Cipro.  Nothing is helping. The dentist is putting in the permanent crowns in a few days with a temporary cement to see if one of the teeth may need a root canal.  Can anyone advise me how to lessen the pain?  It is fierce and I am afraid the dentist permanently damaged my nerves.

I think you are right. It is the needle.

Seeing an endodontist is advised. If pulp is not encroached by prep procedure, possible pain source is bite.
