sinuses or tooth abcess

About four days ago I noticed a very slight throbbing sensation (not pain) in my second premolar when touching the sinus area on my cheeks and under eyes. The tooth has been under a crown for two years and I have always experienced slight gum problems especially in the beginning of different seasons when weather changes often.

This throbbing sensation occurs only when I touch the above indicated area and besides that I don't have any other problems. The tooth doesn't hurt when chewing and pressing, there is no gum bleeding and no foul odor, just this sensation.

I was wondering whether this could be a sinus issue or a tooth issue. As I said, the sensation has been there for 4 days and no other tooth symptoms appear. On the other hand, I've had stuffed nose on this side and sinus drainage from my nose to throat, which makes me think this might be a sinus. I've also had slight headaches from sinuses. Why does it reflect on this one crowned tooth?

I have no other crowned teeth and my other teeth are all healthy. Could it be because this one has always been very sensitive?
I am a 25 year old female.
Thank you.

I read your 4/15/07 post with interest.  I have a similar sensation in my crown, installed 9 months ago.  Only within the last month I've had a throbbing sensation off and on--not really pain.  It worries me--I hope it's related to my almost constant sinus and allergy problems, and is not the beginning of an abcess or infection.

Anyone else out there with similar sensations under a crown?

I would say a panorama x-ray is indicated so I would be off to the dentist, first, as an x-ray of some sort I think is needed.

If a DR orders a Skull x-ray, there is generally radiologist fees. $$

My take is that should the first round of antibiotics be related to a dental issue you may need  a second round. If it is only a sinus infection you may be spared additional rounds.

Then there could be an issue of the right antibiotic if some doctor or dentist gets nit-picky.

(If your area is like mine, it is far easier to see a dentist than a doctor or a barber vs a beautician) ;-)

Anyway Good Luck!
