swelling after wisdom teeth extraction

my dentist recommended that i only use cold packs to reduce swelling the day of the surgery.  i had surgery yesterday, and the swelling has increased, of course.  but i'm wondering why i can't continue use of cold packs.  he suggested hot compress, but i feel like this would only make me feel worse.  i'm experiencing the usual: swelling, pain and slight pressure from the swelling.  does this have anything to do with preventing dry socket?

Continuous use of cold packing can compromise blood supply , which may increase the risk of infection and  delayed wound healing. Hot packing may increase swelling.
